Lopud

The middle Elaphiti island — no cars, one long harbour promenade, and Šunj beach, the closest sand beach to Dubrovnik.

Lopud is one of the three Elaphiti islands you can reach easily by ferry from Gruž. It's car-free, roughly 5km end to end, and its main village wraps around a sheltered harbour with palm trees, a Renaissance Franciscan monastery, and a shore promenade of small hotels and villas. Cross the island by foot in 30 minutes (or by golf-cart taxi for €7) and you reach Šunj — one of the very few actual sandy beaches on the entire Dalmatian coast.

This suits travellers who want island stillness with real infrastructure. There's a proper hotel scene, a couple of good restaurants, ferries to Dubrovnik every 90 minutes in season, and you can bring a suitcase without hating yourself. Skip Lopud if you need a car, want variety in dinner options, or planned to see Dubrovnik in the evenings — the last ferry back leaves around 7-8pm depending on the day.

At 9pm the harbour promenade is quiet enough to hear the water against the stone quay. A handful of restaurant terraces stay lit, a few families walk the length of the front and back, and by 10.30pm most of the island has gone to bed. This is not a place for anyone chasing bars or late dinners past 10pm — the appeal is exactly the opposite, a small lit strip of village against dark hillside and dark sea, and cats asleep on the monastery steps.

Outside July and August the island empties fast: shoulder-season Lopud in May or late September has maybe a third of the beds open, ferries thin to a handful a day, and Šunj beach can be nearly empty by 10am. That trade-off — fewer boats, fewer restaurants open, but genuine solitude — suits a slower two or three night stay far better than a rushed day trip in peak season, when the same beach and the same three restaurants fill with day visitors off the Dubrovnik boats.

Where to stay in Lopud

The village's only proper hotel, Hotel Lopudski Dvori, sits back from the harbour off Ulica Iva Kuljevana and runs €140-€210 a night in July and August, dropping to €85-€110 in May, June and September; the island is effectively shut from November to March, so booking outside season means checking directly with the property rather than trusting a live calendar. White House Lopud and Beloc House Lopud Island are smaller guesthouses closer to the pier, from €95 in high season and under €70 in shoulder months, both with terraces rather than sea-view balconies. Village apartments in the stone houses off Ulica Iva Kuljevana go for €78-€121 with terraces. Avoid the far ends of the promenade if you want to be close to the ferry pier — a suitcase drag on cobblestones for 15 minutes is unpleasant. Best value: a village apartment 100m up from the harbour, quiet at night and five minutes to the pier and restaurants — book Hotel Lopudski Dvori for a proper hotel room, or White House Lopud and Beloc House Lopud Island if you want a smaller guesthouse.

The essentials

Village to Šunj beach and back (3 km)

From the ferry pier, walk south along the harbour promenade past the Franciscan monastery, turn inland on the marked path signposted Šunj, climb gently through olive terraces and pine woods, descend on the far side to the sandy Šunj beach, and return by the same path or the parallel road. The crossing takes about 30 minutes each way at an easy pace; there's no shade or water tap on the inland stretch, so carry a bottle, and the climb back from Šunj is the only uphill section of the whole loop.

Getting there & around

Jadrolinija catamarans and ferries run from Gruž port to Lopud several times daily, €7 each way, 55 minutes on the ferry or 30 minutes on the fast catamaran. In summer, first boat around 7am, last back around 7pm — check timetables at Gruž. From Dubrovnik Airport it's roughly 25 minutes by taxi to Gruž port, or the airport bus to Pile Gate followed by a 15-minute walk down to the harbour; budget an hour door-to-door before the ferry departs. There are no cars on Lopud; travel is on foot or by small electric golf-cart taxis (€4-€9 per trip). Luggage carts are available at the pier (€4) for the walk to hotels.
