What to expect at Dubrovnik City Walls
Built between the 13th and 17th centuries and never breached, the City Walls are Dubrovnik's defining monument — a continuous circuit of limestone battlements, towers and bastions ringing the entire Old Town. From the parapet you get the view the postcards borrow: terracotta roofs tumbling toward Lokrum island, the Stradun cutting a marble line through the core, and open Adriatic on the seaward side. It is a working piece of medieval military engineering you happen to be walking on top of.
Enter at Pile Gate, walk counter-clockwise, and start early — 8:00 in summer or the last hour before closing when the light softens and the cruise crowds thin. Wear proper shoes, bring water, and expect roughly two hours if you stop for photos. Shade is scarce, so a hat matters more than a guide. Skip midday between 11:00 and 15:00 when the stone bakes and queues at Pile stretch back to Onofrio's Fountain.
