What to expect at Fort Bokar

Bokar is the smaller round fortress you see cantilevered out over the sea from the southwest corner of the walls, seemingly hanging above the water. Designed by Michelozzo in 1461 as the key defensive point covering the Pile Gate bridge and the moat, it was one of the earliest casemated forts in Europe — a piece of military architecture ahead of its time. The two-story stone chambers inside are usually open as an exhibition space during summer, showing pieces of medieval weaponry and models of the city's defensive system.

It is a quick stop on the walls circuit rather than a destination in itself — 10 to 15 minutes tops. What makes Bokar memorable is the view straight across to Fort Lovrijenac on its cliff, with Kolorina cove between them. This is one of the classic Dubrovnik postcards, and the light is best in late afternoon when the western sun hits both forts head-on.
