Getting there and around
Lopud is reached by ferry from Dubrovnik, with boats every 90 minutes in season. The last ferry back leaves around 7-8pm depending on the day, which is why the island empties of day visitors and settles into its evening quiet. Outside July and August ferries thin to a handful a day, so a rushed day trip in peak season fills the same beach and the same three restaurants. Once there, the island has no cars: you walk the harbour promenade and the marked paths. The loop to Šunj beach and back is 3 km, about 30 minutes each way at an easy pace, with the climb back from Šunj the only uphill section.
When to go
July and August are peak: Šunj and the three restaurants fill with day visitors off the Dubrovnik boats. Outside those two months the island empties fast — shoulder-season Lopud in May or late September has maybe a third of the beds open, ferries thin to a handful a day, and Šunj beach can be nearly empty by 10am. That trade-off of fewer boats and fewer restaurants suits a slower two or three night stay far better than a rushed day trip. On peak summer weekends Šunj gets crowded, so go on a weekday.
