Getting there and around
Lopud is reached by ferry from Dubrovnik: in season boats run every 90 minutes, and the last ferry back leaves around 7-8pm depending on the day, so seeing Dubrovnik in the evenings from the island is not practical. Outside July and August ferries thin to a handful a day. There are no cars on the island; you walk. From the ferry pier, the harbour promenade runs south past the Franciscan monastery, and a marked path signposted Šunj climbs through olive terraces and pine woods to the sand beach, about 30 minutes each way. A day trip works — first boat at 9am, last back at 6pm gives 8 hours — but overnight is better if you want the island empty in the evening.
When to go
July and August are peak: the same beach and the same three restaurants fill with day visitors off the Dubrovnik boats, and Šunj gets crowded at weekends, so go on a weekday. Outside those months the island empties fast — shoulder-season Lopud in May or late September has maybe a third of the beds open, ferries thin to a handful a day, and Šunj can be nearly empty by 10am. That trade-off of fewer boats and fewer restaurants open, but genuine solitude, suits a slower two or three night stay far better than a rushed peak-season day trip.
