Why people stay in Lapad
Lapad is a peninsula three kilometres west of the walls that does the daily business of Dubrovnik — the schools, the supermarkets, the dentists, the football club. Šetalište Kralja Tomislava is the pedestrian axis, a 500-metre pine-lined promenade of gelato, pizza al taglio and family konobas that ends at Lapad Bay. In summer the bay is a proper beach scene: pebble shore, roped-off swim area, paddleboards for rent at $15 an hour, three or four decent beach bars.
This is the honest family choice — cheaper than Ploče, quieter than the Old Town, and full of the small conveniences that matter with kids. Rooms with a balcony and a kettle at $110-$150 are realistic in June. The trade-off is you’re on the bus to reach the walled city, 12 minutes on the 1A but every ten minutes until midnight. Skip Lapad if you want atmosphere-at-your-doorstep — evenings here are family-friendly, not moody.
Mid-size hotels along Iva Dulčića and Masarykov Put with sea-view balconies and pools sit at $160-$240 in high summer. Apartment rentals in the residential streets — Ćira Carića, Nika i Meda Pucića — go for $90-$130 with kitchens, walking to the beach in ten minutes. Avoid rooms facing Masarykov Put — it's the arterial road, buses from 5am. The good value is on Šetalište Nika i Meda Pucića, quiet, tree-lined, five minutes downhill to the promenade.

Getting around Lapad
Bus 1A from Pile terminates at the top of the Lapad promenade every 10 minutes from 5:30am to midnight, $2. Bus 6 loops around Babin Kuk. To reach Gruž port, walk down through the Batala neighbourhood in 20 minutes or catch the 1B. Airport shuttle drops at Pile — you’ll change once to reach Lapad, or take a taxi directly for $50. Parking on Iva Dulčića is $3 an hour, and Lapad has actual supermarkets (Konzum on Kralja Tomislava, open 7am-10pm).
Questions about Lapad
It's the best base for families. Real beach, safe pedestrian promenade, buses everywhere, cheaper than the Old Town, and you can walk to a supermarket for milk and nappies at 9pm.
12 minutes on the 1A bus at any hour, or 35 minutes to walk it via the Boninovo cliff road. Taxi is $12 and takes 10 minutes off-peak.
