Gruž is the working port, 15 minutes on bus 1A from Pile gate. Small guesthouses here start at $55 a night in shoulder season versus $180 in the Old Town, and the Saturday morning fruit and fish market is one of the best in Dalmatia. Look at rooms above Kantun Bar or the Villa Klaić area — clean, family-run, and walking distance to the ferry pier if you want a cheap Lokrum or Šipan day.
