A car is a liability here: parking is scarce and the promenade is pedestrian-only, with everything in Lapad — the beach, the shops, the bars — within a 15-minute walk of any hotel on the peninsula. Buses 1A and 1B cover the Old Town and Gruž every ten minutes, so reaching the walls is a short ride. For the coast, start at the top of Šetalište Kralja Tomislava, follow the pine promenade down to the bay and the coast path clockwise around the peninsula, and take Bus 6 back to Pile from the stop above Cava.
When to go
The promenade fills from around 9pm, when families are finishing ice creams, teenagers are on rented bikes and pensioners sit on the benches under the pines. Outside July and August the shops around the bay shut around 10pm; in those two months they stay open later. Spring and autumn are generally the quieter, milder windows for walking out to the Babin Kuk headland and swimming at Cava, while high summer is the busiest.
