Why people stay in Pile
Pile is the hinge between the walled city and the rest of Dubrovnik. Every bus in town terminates here, every airport shuttle drops you here, and the small square in front of the gate is the busiest square metre in Croatia between June and September. Past the initial crush, it's a quiet residential slope of Habsburg-era villas climbing up Ilijina Glavica, with rose gardens spilling over stone walls and cats sleeping on parked Fiat Pandas.
Stay here if you want to be on foot to the Old Town in three minutes but sleep somewhere with actual air and a window that opens onto trees, not tourists. The under-Lovrijenac cove, Šulić, is a locals' swim spot — no sand, sharp rock, one small café that closes at 6pm. Skip Pile if you were hoping for nightlife: the bars are all inside the walls, and everything on this side shuts by 11pm.
Villa-style hotels on Marijana Blažića and Don Frana Bulića run $180-$260 in summer with sea views and small pools cut into rock. Family guesthouses further up Ivanska deliver $100-$140 rooms with breakfast on a garden terrace, ten minutes' walk downhill. Avoid anything directly on the bus turnaround — it's operational from 5am. Anything advertised as 'above Lovrijenac' will involve a serious hill; ask about steps before you book, some places have 90 of them from the road.

Getting around Pile
Pile is the terminus for Libertas lines 1A, 1B, 3, 4, 5, 6 and the Platanus airport shuttle. Buy tickets from the small kiosk on the square, $2, or pay $2.50 on board. To Lapad it's 12 minutes on the 1A; to Gruž ferry port 20 minutes on the 1B. There's a taxi rank in front of the gate — $10 flat to Gruž, $50 to the airport. Cars can drop off but not park; the nearest garage is Ilijina Glavica, $6 an hour.
