Pile is the transport hinge of Dubrovnik: every bus in town terminates here and every airport shuttle drops you at the square in front of the gate, so you arrive on foot from the stop. From there the Old Town is on foot through the gate, and the sea path down Od Tabakarije leads to Šulić cove and around the base of Lovrijenac. The Pile cove and Lovrijenac loop runs about 1.5 km and takes roughly 40 minutes without stopping, longer with a swim; the middle section along the sea path has no shade and can be slippery when wet, so flat-soled shoes are worth it.
When to go
Time your visit around the crowds rather than the calendar: first cruise passengers arrive by shuttle around 8.30am, and between 9am and 4pm there is constant crowd movement. Before 8am and after 6pm it is calm, and by 9pm the day-trip coaches are gone, the drawbridge lamps are lit and the square is empty.
