Slano is a deep, sheltered natural harbour 35km north of Dubrovnik on the coastal highway. The bay pushes 2km inland, which makes for calm water even in strong afternoon winds, and the village that wraps around it is small, low-key, and lived-in by locals. A 15th-century Franciscan monastery sits on the harbour, and one large hotel (the Admiral Grand) provides the majority of the tourist beds.
This is a proper break-from-town choice — half an hour by bus, half the price, and a completely different pace. You can rent a paddleboard for $12 an hour and cross the bay to lunch, or catch a boat to Šipan and Lopud in 30 minutes. Skip Slano if you want an active town at night; there are maybe five restaurants and everything shuts by 11pm. It suits families, couples wanting quiet, or travellers using it as a Peljesac/Ston base.
The Admiral Grand Hotel on the bay runs $150-$250 half-board in summer with a private pebble beach. Small guesthouses in the village and up the hillside offer $75-$110 rooms, some with breakfast on a shared terrace. Apartments in the surrounding hamlets go for $65-$95 with a car essential. Avoid inland-facing rooms with no view — the bay is the whole point. The stone-house guesthouses on the eastern shore are the atmospheric picks.

Getting around Slano
Buses to Slano leave from Dubrovnik main bus station (Gruž) roughly hourly, $6, taking 40 minutes. Any bus heading to Ston, Peljesac, or Split will stop in Slano — ask the driver. From the airport, taxi $70 or shuttle to Gruž then a bus. Parking in the village is free. A rental car is genuinely useful for visiting Ston, the Peljesac wineries, or the Elaphiti ferry ports.
