Home/Where to stay/Koločep/3-star hotels
3-star hotels in Koločep
A shortlist of the 3-star hotels, guesthouses and apartments on Koločep, the Elaphiti island 30 minutes by ferry from Dubrovnik. It is for travellers weighing up a couple of quiet nights in Donje Čelo or Gornje Čelo against a day trip.
Staying in Koločep
Koločep is the closest of the Elaphiti islands to Dubrovnik, 30 minutes on the ferry from Gruž, and about 150 people live here year-round in two villages, Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo, joined by a paved 1.5km footpath through olive and pine. There are no cars on the island. Beyond the one hotel, the Kalamota Island Resort, the accommodation is a handful of small family guesthouses and apartments, which is exactly what this shortlist covers. It is peak island-quiet: a swim, a walk to the other village, lunch at a konoba, an afternoon on a rock ledge with a book.
The listed properties sit in Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo, the two villages on the island, with most addresses in Donje Celo, where the ferry pier is, and a few on the lanes above or between them. It suits couples doing 2-3 nights of complete decompression, or families with older children who won't be bored in five minutes. Skip it if you want variety, nightlife or a restaurant scene; there is essentially none, and the last ferry back to Dubrovnik goes around 8pm.

Self-catering
Guest House Oreb, Apartments Maria Kolocep, Apartments Miskovic, Apartments Elica and Apartments Cervelin all come with a kitchen or kitchenette, oven or refrigerator, and air conditioning. That matters here: there is one small grocery store in Donje Čelo near the pier and no ATM on the island, so a kitchen covers the evenings when the konoba is the only other option.

Where to stay in Koločep
Donje Čelo
Donje Čelo is the village where the ferry from Gruž arrives, so it holds the pier, the one small grocery store and the harbour that goes dark by 9pm. It is the busier of the island's two villages in the sense that anything happens here at all. The footpath to Gornje Čelo starts uphill from the village and crosses the island's central ridge through olive terraces.

Gornje Čelo
Gornje Čelo sits on the far side of the island's central ridge, at the end of the paved 1.5km path, and has a small stone harbour of its own. It is the quieter of the two villages, reached on foot through olive and pine, with the alternative sea-coast route back along the south side. Villa Sea Dream and Apartment Iva&Andro are both addressed here.

Getting there and around
Koločep is 30 minutes by ferry from Gruž in Dubrovnik, with 6-8 boats a day in summer. The last boat back goes around 8pm, which cuts off a late dinner in the Old Town for anyone staying overnight, though some people commute in for evenings. On the island there are no cars; the two villages, Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo, are connected by a paved 1.5km footpath through olive and pine, and there is no street lighting once you clear the last house, so bring a torch if you walk between them after dinner. There is no ATM on the island, so bring enough cash from Dubrovnik or use a card at the hotel.
When to go
The site's own advice is aimed at summer: 6-8 ferries a day in summer, the last boat around 8pm, and the grocery store's opening hours described as irregular outside July and August. The empty morning swim before the day-trip boats arrive is the argument for staying overnight rather than visiting as a half-day trip. Two nights is described as the right dose for most people, three if you plan a kayak trip, a Lopud day on the 10-minute ferry hop, and a swim day.

Questions, answered
How do you get to Koločep?
By ferry from Gruž in Dubrovnik: 30 minutes, with 6-8 boats a day in summer. The last boat leaves around 8pm, so an evening in the Old Town means catching that one or staying in Dubrovnik.
Is there a hotel on Koločep?
There is one hotel, the Kalamota Island Resort, formerly TUI Sensimar. The properties on this list are the other option: a handful of small family guesthouses and apartments in Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo, all rated 3-star.
How many nights should I stay?
For most people two nights is the right dose. Three nights is fine if you plan a kayak trip, a day on Lopud via the 10-minute ferry hop, and a swim day, and you like your book.
Can you walk between the two villages?
Yes. Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo are connected by a paved 1.5km footpath through olive and pine, crossing the island's central ridge. There is an alternative sea-coast route back on the south side, and no street lighting at night.
Is there anywhere to eat and shop?
A couple of restaurants, and one small grocery store in Donje Čelo near the pier stocking basics, bread and sun cream, with irregular hours outside July and August. Several of the listed apartments have a kitchen or kitchenette.
Should I bring cash?
There is no ATM on the island, so bring enough cash from Dubrovnik or use a card at the hotel. The nearest full supermarket is in Dubrovnik.
Who is Koločep not for?
Anyone who wants variety, nightlife or a proper restaurant scene: there is essentially none. By 9pm Donje Čelo goes properly dark, with a few lit windows above the harbour and not much else.
Does Boutique Hotel Tomic have good reviews?
It has a guest rating of 4.4 out of 5 from 50 reviews, and lists air conditioning, a balcony, a garden, free wifi and beach nearby, on Obala Ivana Kuljevana in Donje Čelo.
