Koločep is 30 minutes by ferry from Gruž in Dubrovnik, with 6-8 boats a day in summer. Some people commute in for evenings in the Old Town, though the last boat around 8pm cuts off the late dinner option. There are no cars on the island; Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo are connected by a paved 1.5km footpath through olive and pine, and the walk from Donje Čelo to Gornje Čelo and back is 3 km. Bring enough cash from Dubrovnik: there is no ATM on the island, and the nearest full supermarket is in Dubrovnik.
When to go
Summer is when the ferry runs 6-8 times a day and the day-trip boats come and go; an overnight buys you the empty morning swim before they arrive and a dinner with nobody else on the terrace. Outside July and August the opening hours of the small grocery store in Donje Čelo are irregular, so plan around it. By 9pm the village goes properly dark in any season, and the last ferry around 8pm means no late return.
