Buža Beach is a natural beach on the rocky shore just outside the Old Town walls. It is reached through a small opening in the city walls, and it is known for its clear water and view of the wall and the sea. The Old Town itself is a walled city of polished limestone, Baroque churches, and a cruise-ship crush from 10am to 4pm you learn to dodge. Inside the walls is roughly 300 metres wide and you can walk it end to end in eight minutes. That compactness is the appeal and the problem: between May and September the Stradun turns into a slow river of day-trippers off the Costa cruisers, and by 11am the side alleys off Prijeko are elbow-to-elbow. Come at 7am or after 8pm and the same streets are a different city. This suits travellers who want to open a shutter and see 15th-century stone, and who don’t mind hauling a suitcase up stairs. Skip if you need parking, a lift, or silence before midnight in July.
