Šipan is reached by ferry from Dubrovnik; the main port is Šipanska Luka in the northwest, with Sudurad's smaller harbour at the southeast end. A single flat valley road runs between the two villages, 9km in all, and a bus meets each incoming ferry. The car ferry allows cars, but with only 9km of road and small villages, leaving the car at Gruž and travelling light is the simpler choice. There is no bank or ATM on the island, so withdraw cash in Dubrovnik before you cross, and expect smaller konobas to prefer cash over cards.
When to go
Aim for a stay that keeps you on the island overnight: the ferry has usually gone by the time the kitchens close around 10pm or 11pm in high season, and by 9pm the harbour lights in both villages are down to a handful of porch bulbs. High season brings the day boats from Dubrovnik, so an early swim before they arrive is the reward for staying. One full day covers the valley walk, a swim and lunch; two nights let you walk it in each direction and catch a sunset from Sudurad.
