About Selca

The municipality includes the coastal settlements of Sumartin and Povlja. Sumartin, on the southeastern coast, is the departure point for the ferry to Makarska on the mainland, and has a harbour, a Franciscan monastery, and a shipyard. Povlja, on the northern coast, is a small harbour village with a historic early Christian basilica. The landscape is marked by terraced vineyards, olive groves, and dry stone walls, with the sea visible from many points. Selca is a quieter alternative to the busier resorts on the western side of Brač, and it retains a working character centred on stone, agriculture, and maritime activity.

Getting there and around

Selca is on the island of Brač, which is reached by ferry from Split to Supetar or from Makarska to Sumartin. The ferry from Makarska arrives directly at Sumartin, in the municipality of Selca. From Supetar, the island's main port, a road crosses the island to Selca and Sumartin. There is also a small airport on Brač, near Bol. On the island, local buses and taxis connect the main settlements, but services are limited, so a car or scooter is useful for exploring the area. The roads are narrow in places, and the terrain is hilly.

When to go

The best time to visit Selca is from late spring to early autumn, when the weather is warm and dry. July and August are the busiest months, especially in Sumartin and Povlja, when ferries run frequently and the sea is warm for swimming. May, June, September, and October offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds, and are suitable for walking, cycling, and visiting the stonecutting workshops and historic sites. Winter can be windy and wet, with reduced ferry services.
