Bus 8 connects Mokošica to the Old Town every 20-30 minutes, and the suburb sits about 8km from the walled city at the head of the Rijeka Dubrovačka fjord. A car is not strictly necessary, but it makes the difference between a workable base and a frustrating one: without one, evenings and day trips beyond the bus route are limited, while with one, Konavle, Pelješac and the airport are all easily reachable. The pedestrian shore path runs from the small church in old Mokošica east along the fjord bank past the Orsan yacht club to the freshwater spring at Komolac, 3 km, and you can return by the same route or catch the 8 bus back from the main road.
When to go
Summer is when locals swim off the yacht club pontoons in old Mokošica — the fjord water is freshwater-brackish, colder than the sea and muddy underfoot, so proper sea swimming means driving or bussing to Lapad. The shore path to the Komolac spring is a spring and autumn walk: herons stand at low water among the reed beds, and the cicadas and lit balconies of high summer give the new town its evening character.
