Walk up Srđ instead of paying the cable car
The switchback trail up Mount Srđ from behind the Old Town is about 90 minutes at a moderate pace, gaining 1,350 feet. It's free, the views open up gradually, and the trail passes the ruined fortifications on the ridge. Bring 2 litres of water — no shade in summer. Same view as the $30 cable car; you can ride it down for $18 if your legs are done. Start at 6am in July-August to beat the heat.
The Ploče gate, harbours, and Banje beach
The Old Port is free to wander at any hour and gorgeous at sunset. From there walk out through the Ploče gate to Banje beach — free public beach, pebbly, with the walls as your backdrop. Fort Lovrijenac's exterior and the walk down to Šulić cove costs nothing (the fort itself is included in your walls ticket anyway). And the 8am walk down Stradun before the cruise crowds is free and one of the most memorable half-hours you’ll have here.
Churches, cloisters, and small museums
Most churches are free to enter. The Franciscan monastery cloister costs $8 but the church itself and the courtyard are free to peek into. St Blaise's church on Luža square, the cathedral, and the Serbian Orthodox church on Od Puča are all free. The Ethnographic Museum's ground floor courtyard is free. And Lokrum island is $30 with ferry but on any weekend, the flat rocks below Banje beach do the same job for swimming with the same view.
Sunsets and free festivals
Sunset from the Buža side of the walls or Fort Lovrijenac headland is free (if you’re outside on the road). The Feast of St Blaise (Feb 3) is a free citywide festival with parades and open-doors churches. The Summer Festival (July-August) has free outdoor performances scattered through the Old Town — check the daily schedule at the Pile tourist office. And the Libertas Film Festival in mid-July shows free open-air films at Fort Revelin.
