Where Is the Centre of Dubrovnik?

When people say the "centre" of Dubrovnik, they almost always mean the Old Town — the walled medieval core. But the city spreads well beyond the walls, and knowing the basic geography before you book saves confusion later. Here is the simple version.

The Old Town is the centre

Dubrovnik's heart is the Old Town (Stari Grad), enclosed by its famous stone walls. Its spine is the Stradun (Placa), the polished limestone main street running between the two great gates. Everything the postcards show — the walls walk, the cathedral, the bell tower, the little squares and stepped lanes — is inside this compact, car-free zone.

The two gates: Pile and Ploče

The Pile Gate at the western end is the main entrance and transport hub: buses, taxis and the airport shuttle stop here. The Ploče Gate at the eastern end opens toward Banje Beach and the upscale hotels of the Ploče district. Orient yourself by these two and the Old Town instantly makes sense.

The districts around the walls

• Ploče — just east, cliffside hotels and the nearest beach. • Pile & Boninovo — just west, walkable to the gate. • Gruž — the port about 3 km northwest, with ferries, the bus station and the local market. • Lapad & Babin Kuk — the leafy beach peninsula about 4 km west.

Is Dubrovnik walkable?

The Old Town itself is entirely on foot — and full of steps. Between districts, distances are short but hilly, so most visitors combine walking with the frequent local buses that run between Pile, Gruž and Lapad. If being able to walk to the walls matters to you, base yourself in the Old Town, Ploče or Pile.
