Gundulićeva Poljana — the Old Town market
Tucked behind the Cathedral in the heart of the Old Town, this small open-air market sets up most mornings on Gundulićeva Poljana square. It is more traveller-facing than a weekly shop: expect seasonal fruit and vegetables alongside lavender sachets, candied orange peel, dried figs, local honey and homemade rakija and liqueurs — easy, packable souvenirs. Stalls are busiest mid-morning and thin out by early afternoon, so come before lunch.
Gruž Market — the local green and fish market
For the real working market, head to Gruž by the port, about 3 km from the Old Town and a short bus ride away. This is where locals shop: a larger green market of produce, cheese and cured meats, with a fish market busiest in the early morning when the catch comes in. Prices are lower and the atmosphere more everyday than in the Old Town. Mornings only — the earlier the better for fish.
